Status: Unverified — based on the couple's testimony, including memories recovered under hypnosis; no independent proof has been established.
Barney and Betty Hill were a Portsmouth, New Hampshire couple — a postal worker and a social worker — and active civil rights supporters. On the night of September 19, 1961, they were driving home from a vacation in Niagara Falls and Montreal along U.S. Route 3 when Betty noticed a bright point of light that seemed to move oddly near the Moon and Jupiter.
They stopped at a scenic pull-off. Through binoculars Betty saw an odd-shaped craft with flashing colored lights, and Barney said it descended toward them. They drove on, and later realized they had arrived home hours later than expected, with only fragmentary memories of the trip. The Hills reported anxiety and odd details, including a scuffed pair of shoes and a torn binocular strap.
They contacted Pease Air Force Base and civilian UFO groups. In later sessions, under hypnosis, they described being taken aboard a craft and examined. Their story was published in the 1966 book The Interrupted Journey and dramatized in a 1975 television film. Betty's “star map” was later linked by two ufologists to Zeta Reticuli. Skeptics point to dreams and the suggestibility of memories recovered under hypnosis. In 2011 New Hampshire installed a state historical marker at the site of the craft's alleged first approach.
