Status: Unverified — skeptical investigators have questioned the details; the witnesses' lawsuit was dismissed.
On the evening of December 29, 1980, Betty Cash (51), Vickie Landrum (57) and Vickie's seven-year-old grandson Colby were driving home to Dayton, Texas after dinner. At about 9 p.m., on an isolated two-lane road through dense woods, they saw a bright light above the trees that grew closer and larger. They described a huge diamond-shaped object hovering at treetop level, expelling flame from its base and giving off intense heat.
Cash and Landrum got out of the car to look, but Landrum soon returned to the vehicle to comfort the frightened child while Cash stayed outside, transfixed. Afterward the group said they saw a number of helicopters, including twin-rotor types, near the object. All three reported illness afterward, along with burns and eye irritation, and Cash's health problems were severe.
The witnesses sued the U.S. government. The civil case was dismissed, which was unusual for a UFO report. Skeptical investigators, including Philip Klass and Brian Dunning, have questioned the details and the overall authenticity of the incident, and no official explanation was ever settled.
