The Travis Walton Incident — Heber, AZ (1975)

Historical case When: November 5, 1975  ·  Where: Apache–Sitgreaves National Forests, near Heber, Arizona

Status: Unverified — disputed. Skeptics allege a hoax; polygraph results and witness statements have been argued both ways.

On November 5, 1975, a logging crew reported that one of its members, 22-year-old Travis Walton, was missing in the Apache–Sitgreaves National Forests near Heber, Arizona. The six other crew members said that as they drove home after sunset, driver Mike Rogers stopped because they saw an unusual light. Walton got out and walked toward it. According to the crew, a beam of light hit him and he fell. They fled, thinking he was dead.

Police organized search parties with a helicopter. After five days, Walton called his sister from a phone booth in Heber. He said he had been taken aboard a craft. He sold his story to the National Enquirer, which gave the crew a $5,000 prize for its “Best Case of the Year.” His 1978 book The Walton Experience became the basis of the 1993 film Fire in the Sky.

Science writers Philip Klass and Michael Shermer alleged a hoax, suggesting the crew was behind on a contract and an “act of God” would excuse the delay. In March 2021, Mike Rogers publicly renounced his status as a witness, and later apologized to Walton. The case continues to draw both interest and doubt.
